In seeking more transparency in the use of EU structural funds 2013-2020 Mr Markus Pieper MEP Vice-Chair of the European Parliament Committee on Regional Development stated:

"We need more cross-border motorway connections, railway lines, and shipping possibilities in order to generate economic growth"

Ireland’s Western Arc presents an opportunity to create a counterbalance to Dublin for the benefit of the Irish economy and for the capital itself by easing congestion and enhancing inter-regional services and trade.

The natural synergies which exist between the Western Arc and the South East Region through Europort Rosslare and Waterford have the potential to deliver real benefit to the entire island of Ireland.

It is vital that the private sector be allowed to compete to operate services and apply for project financing for infrastructure investment.
